The Alberta Psychiatric Association Foundation is a newly created (2008) organization whose purpose is to raise money for education and research in the field of Mental Health.  It is accredited as a Charitable Organization under the Federal Income Tax Act and is licensed as a Charity by the Alberta Government.  As a result donors receive a tax credit from both the Federal and Provincial governments. (For the Provincial tax credit to take effect the donation must be more than $200.00).  It is anticipated that the majority of the Foundation’s income will be derived from Corporations.  However there are significant benefits to be had for individual donors, especially when the donations involve a gift of securities or life insurance.  Such donations are potentially very valuable for minimizing taxes payable by an individual’s estate and in some circumstances may provide immediate tax relief as well.
