The Alberta Psychiatric Association is linked to the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) through the Section of General Psychiatry and the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Each Section elects two psychiatrists to become delegates to the AMA governing body, the Representative Forum. From the Representative Forum are elected the members of the Board of Directors of the AMA. Currently, one psychiatrist sits on the AMA Board (Sandra Corbett) and a second (P.J. White) is the AMA President-Elect.
An important Section function is to represent Psychiatrists during fees and benefits negotiations that establish the Alberta Health Care Schedule of Medical Benefits.
The Section of General Psychiatry holds its Executive and Annual General Meetings in conjunction with, but separate from the Alberta Psychiatric Association. It operates under separate by-laws which it shares with other AMA Sections.
