Evaluate the session

Presenting Author(s): Dr. Valerie Primeau, MD, FRCPC

Date and time: 21 Mar 2026 from 09:00 to 10:00

Location: Mount Temple Ballroom A/B  Floor Map

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify key clinical challenges in the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, including diagnostic uncertainty, symptom overlap, treatment adherence, and the impact of co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions;
  2. Examine how comorbid conditions, including substance use, trauma-related conditions, and chronic medical illness, interact with schizophrenia, contributing to diagnostic complexity and shaping pharmacologic and psychosocial treatment approaches; and
  3. Discuss strategies for integrating biomedical treatment with culturally responsive, holistic, and Indigenous-informed approaches to care.

Abstract

Treating individuals with Schizophrenia requires clinicians to navigate significant diagnostic and therapeutic complexity. Assessment is challenged by symptom overlap with mood, trauma-related, and substance-induced disorders, as well as fluctuating presentations across illness stages. Treatment is further complicated by poor adherence, medication side effects, and the presence of co-occurring psychiatric and chronic medical conditions that influence prognosis and care planning. Comorbid substance use, trauma exposure, and medical illness not only obscure diagnosis but also necessitate integrated pharmacologic and psychosocial strategies tailored to individual risk, capacity, and context. Effective care therefore demands a multidimensional approach that combines evidence-based treatment with cultural competency and humility. This session will highlight common clinical challenges in Schizophrenia care and provide practical insights to help clinicians navigate its inherent complexity.
