Learning Objectives

1. Comprehensive care and treatment of patients who may, alongside other disorders, suffer from Substance Use Disorders;

2. Comprehensive treatment requires us to meet the patient where they are, and walk with them through their personalised journey of recovery; and

3. The high risk of relapse and danger of overdose death requires us to teach patients and their families about emergency interim management of overdose emergency, and pre-provision of the opioid antagonist naloxone.

Abstract

Our responsibility to our patients is their comprehensive care and treatment. Substance Use Disorders may present as primary or secondary disorder, but are often overlooked, leading to failure to benefit as expected.

Comprehensive treatment requires us to meet the patient where they are, and walk with them through their personalised journey of recovery. For many patients with Opioid Use Disorder, abstinence will be essential for recovery: for others, opioid agonist maintenance will be life-saving and enable major change. For all patients, the danger of overdose death from ever-present risk of lapse requires us to teach our patients and their families about risk of overdose, emergency interim management, and pre-provision of the opioid antagonist naloxone.
