Dr. Hibbard obtained a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Alberta in 1965, followed by completion of an MD at the University of Toronto in 1971. After internship, work as a general practitioner continued for a decade before completing a residency in Psychiatry in 1988. A decade of employment at the University of Alberta Hospital preceded a move to the Royal Alexandra Hospital and retirement from there in 2016. Consultancy work continued at Alberta Hospital Edmonton until full retirement in 2021. He was Secretary-Treasurer of the APA (1995–1999) and President (2000–2001). He also served as Psychiatry Site Chief at Royal Alexandra Hospital and Zone Clinical Department Head for Addiction and Mental Health in Edmonton (2010–2014). Recently, he was reappointed Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta. He specialised in brain and behaviour, helped develop Dialectical Behaviour Therapy in Edmonton, and supported CBT training for psychiatric residents. In retirement a goal is to apply brain research to mental health practice. He enjoys hiking and gardening. His daughters, Jennifer (Calgary) and Kate (Edmonton), are practicing psychiatrists. |
